A38 is one of the most peculiar ruin bars in Budapest, not only because it is an up-cycled ship (a decommissioned stone-carrier ship operating in Ukraine), but also because it is one of the best places for non-mainstream music lovers in Budapest with its rich concert programmes. That said, A38 is not strictly speaking a ruin pub or bar, more like an off the beaten track concert venue / exhibition hall / restaurant. But, because of the old vehicle’s new function, and the general indie atmosphere, we have decided to honorary mention it amongst the top ruin bars of Budapest. Go and see for yourself why.
A38 ruin bar is literally a vessel that rocks throughout the year on the river Danube – the standing ship with its two-floor bar/ nightclub / concert venue is anchored permanently at the foot of Petofi Bridge.
The ruin bar was voted the “Best Bar in the World” in an online poll arranged by Lonely Planet, but it outperforms itself by offering cool original and tribute concerts. A38 Ship is more than a pub (as are most ruin bars in Budapest), it is community place, a place to hang around any hour of the day, a cultural venue offering a wide range of jazz, punk, world, electronic, contemporary, rock music along with various cultural events (film clubs, gastronomy events etc). On top of all this, let’s not forget about the astonishing view over the river of the city’s southern attractions by the Danube, like the National Theatre, the Whale building, or Ludwig Museum.
A38 ruin bar features a highly popular rooftop terrace for afternoon lounging with snacks, drinks, as well as a reasonably priced indoor restaurant for casual and formal eat outs / gatherings. For many locals, this ship has been an absolute symbol of freedom, music, night adventures and youth.
A38 Ship & ruin bar has a standing capacity of approximately 600 (tickets for concerts still sell out nevertheless), and a seating capacity of 250 people. With the terrific sound system used, this unique ruin bar quickly became one of the most popular concert venues of Budapest.
History of A38 Ruin Bar
The name A38 comes from Artemovszk 38, which is the name of a ship prototype as this boat is the reincarnation of a Ukrainian stone-carrier ship. With its inauguration on 30 April 2003, A38 Ship is a modern cultural and music hub on River Danube.
As the ship itself is a venue to see, people often come aboard just to admire.
It does not matter whether you are there for a gig, a party or for just a casual few drinks on the top deck and terrace, you will always have a good time.
