Do’s & Don’ts
Visiting Ruin Bar Crawls in Budapest? Please Read This Before You Go
Dear Visitor,
Budapest’s ruin bars are famous for their artistic atmosphere and quirky interiors – they’re one-of-a-kind! However, please note that in District VII (Erzsébetváros), where most ruin bars are located, there are strict local rules, and organised pub crawls may be considered illegal or disruptive by the authorities.
So, whether you’re going on your own or with friends, here’s what you should know to stay safe and respectful:
- Visit ruin bars individually and enjoy their unique atmosphere. Avoid groups of 4 or more after 10 pm to ensure no ‘pub crawl’ vibe is given to the authorities.
- Stay inside venues after 10 PM – avoid making noise in the streets respecting the residential community.
- Use restrooms inside the bars – always, never the streets.
- Be polite and respect the people who live nearby, similarly to your home town.
- Leave quietly – Budapest residents appreciate your consideration.
What’s NOT OK (Anti-Social or Illegal Behaviour)
- Joining or organising pub crawls in District VII is considered illegal by the local municipality in the 7th District following a residential vote. Even if it’s called a night guided walk or a team building activity, it is illegal.
- Drinking alcohol in public spaces or streets is prohibited.
- Urinating, shouting, or playing music on the streets is not allowed, incurs a fine.
- Damaging property, littering, or being visibly drunk in public is illegal.
- Street noise after 10 PM, especially in residential zones, is taken seriously with consequences.
After years of very unpleasant incidents of pub crawls and rowdy behaviour of groups (especially, but not necessarily, hen parties and stag parties), the Municipality of the District has put the question to the vote and the result is that no pub crawls are allowed.
Section 6 (6) and Section 6 (7):
It constitutes anti-social behaviour contrary to the fundamental rules of communal life if a person organises or leads a pub crawl in a public space, and during this activity, the participants consume alcoholic beverages in public or generate noise that disturbs local residents. For the purposes of paragraph (6), a pub crawl means an organised or guided walk in which participants visit two or more bars – pubs in succession with the aim of consuming alcoholic beverages there, regardless of whether the declared purpose or programme of the walk includes night-time guided tours, socialising, team building, or other leisure activities.
Fines You Could Face
- Public drinking: up to HUF 50,000 (~€130)
- Public urination etc.: up to HUF 150,000 (~€390)
- Loud or disruptive behaviour: from HUF 10,000 to 150,000
These are issued by local police or public order officers, District VII.
